Modern building systems have increasingly shifted toward the use of higher-quality materials. Although lightweight steel has been widely adopted in construction, a formal design standard for this system was only introduced in 2013. The development of this standard was initiated by three major lightweight steel manufacturers in Indonesia, one of which was JSteel (PT Jaindo Metal Industries). The standard was officially registered with the National Standardization Agency of Indonesia and published as SNI 7971-2013.
As part of its commitment to promoting the implementation of SNI 7971-2013, JSteel organized a “One Day Seminar on Lightweight Steel Frame Construction Planning (Cold-Formed Steel Sections) Based on SNI 7971-2013.” The seminar was held from 23–25 September 2014 at Petra Christian University, Surabaya, and Hotel Borobudur, Jakarta, with support from the Indonesian Society of Construction Experts (HAKI) and Petra Christian University. Most participants came from professional design consultants who regularly work with lightweight steel materials.
The seminar featured several respected speakers in the field, including Prof. Emad Gad from Swinburne University of Technology, Australia. In his presentation, Prof. Gad explained general lightweight steel structural design principles based on SNI 7971-2013. Another speaker, Gideon H. Kusuma from Benjamin Gideon & Associates, discussed the application of SNI 7971-2013 in the design of earthquake-resistant building structures.
